Tips for Wearing and Caring for Your Wig on Holiday

holiday wigs

Caring for your own hair on holiday can be a mission in itself, but what about when wearing human hair wigs, wig toppers or hairpieces? Sun, sea and sand are a less-than-ideal trio for our locks, which is why we’re here to share all the need-to-know wig wearing tips and tricks to keep your Mandeville London hair looking and feeling fresh wherever your adventure takes you.

Do You Wear Wigs? No Swimming!

Whether you envision summer by the pool or the sea, arguably the most critical factor when caring for your real hair wig is to never swim in it. At Mandeville London, we advise our clients to never swim in their luxury wigs or half wigs to avoid irreparable damage and to wear instead an alternative head covering, or a wig you wouldn’t miss if it never came back to life!

Chlorine and saltwater dry out and damage your wig hair like they would anyone's, let alone the tangling and matting that can occur along the way. Swimming in your wig can reduce the quality of each precious strand and damage the polymers we use inside the wig cap, during the manufacture of our handmade wigs

Sun Protection for Wig Wearers

We all understand the effects of UV rays on our skin, but what about our hair? Prolonged sun exposure can bleach hair over time, causing it to lighten or fade. While it is usually possible to colour your human hair wig or hairpiece back to your original shade, it’s best to take some precautions to avoid the harmful suns rays and keep your hair in premium condition. We suggest wearing a hat or a silk scarf, especially during the hours when the sun is strongest, or seeking shade when on holiday. Make sure to also store your wig on its block out of direct sunlight when not in use.

Travelling With Wigs? Here Are Some Top Tips

Many wig wearers are wondering how they can best care for their wig, topper or hairpiece when travelling abroad; you might be tempted to skimp on the bulkier accessories you’d usually use at home. If you’d rather not travel with your portable wig stand, make sure to at least bring your rubber head block and pins for washing, styling and storing your precious human hair wigs.

We understand the unique challenges of travelling with wigs, especially when it comes to airport security. Wearing a wig through security might leave you concerned in case the metal wig clips attached to your wig inside will set off security scanners. While many wig wearers have no problems with their metal clips at the airport, it can be preferable to speak to security staff, making them aware of your wig so they can deal with this appropriately if you're worried.

Especially on holiday, sun cream, sand and sea air can mean your wig needs a more regular or intensive washing and conditioning. It’s imperative that this should be done pinned to your head block to avoid damaging the piece. If you’re making a quick trip without the need to wash your wig and would prefer to pack light, scrunch some tissue paper into a ball, using this to pad the inside of your wig, and pop it into a box when not in use. We do not recommend to store your wig in a plastic bag at any time while in the suitcase or luggage as this can trap moisture.

Which Wig Tape Should I Use During Summer And While Travelling?

When visiting hot, sunny climates, it’s natural to be concerned about the security of your real hair wigs if you start to break a sweat. While wigs are commonly known for being hot and exacerbating this issue, rest assured that Mandeville London wigs and hairpieces are lightweight and completely breathable, so they are the perfect choice if you struggle in the hot weather. Typically, we recommend 3M double-sided medical tape to our clients travelling with wigs for day-to-day, as this is great for strong hold and sensitive skin. However, if you know you’ll likely be sweating a lot on vacation and would feel more confident with even stronger tape, we suggest Walkers Ultra Hold.

Wig TLC

Often on our summer holidays, change in climate and humidity can cause hair to feel dry and matted. Upon washing and styling your human hair wigs, make sure to use products that hydrate and nourish each strand such as our personal recommendations from L’Anzas Healing Moisture range. Ample use of serums and leave-in conditioning products can make all the difference, especially to the ends of your hair.

Equally, if your wig isn’t looking or feeling as refreshed as you are after a sunny getaway, treat it to some extra TLC in the form of masks and treatments to combat tired and lacklustre locks. Bond building treatments such as Olaplex can be used on human hair wigs, or for a hydration boost we love Philip Kingsley’s Elasticizer.

Don’t forget, all Mandeville London clients can send their wig, half wig or hairpiece to us for deep cleansing and conditioning treatments. Simply speak to the team who will advise you when to drop off your piece or simply pop it in the post and we’ll take care of the rest!

FAQs for Wig Wearers

1. Can I swim in my real hair wig while on holiday?

No, we strongly advise against swimming in your Mandeville wig, topper, or hairpiece. Chlorine and salt water can cause significant damage, including drying out the hair and damaging the delicate polymer work in your wig. It’s best to wear an alternative head covering or a less expensive wig if you plan on swimming.

2. How can I protect my wig from sun damage while on holiday?

Prolonged sun exposure can bleach and fade the colour of your wig. To protect it, we recommend wearing a hat, especially during peak sunlight hours, or staying in the shade. This helps maintain the quality and colour of your wig, ensuring it stays in premium condition.

3. What should I pack for my wig when travelling?

If you’re travelling, it’s important to bring the right accessories to care for your wig. While you may want to leave bulky items like your wig stand at home, make sure to pack your rubber head block and pins for washing, storing and maintaining your wig style. If packing light without the need to wash your wig, use tissue paper to pad the inside of your wig and store it in a box when not in use.

4. Which wig tape should I use in hot climates?

In warmer climates where you might sweat more, we recommend using a stronger wig tape for added security. While 3M double-sided medical tape is excellent for day-to-day use and sensitive skin, Walkers Ultra Hold is a better option for high-sweat environments, providing a stronger hold.

5. How often should I wash and condition my wig while on holiday?

The frequency of washing your wig while on holiday depends on exposure to elements like sun cream, sand, and sea air. You may need to wash and condition it more regularly. Always use a head block when washing to avoid damaging your wig. Hydrating and nourishing products like those from L’Anza’s Healing Moisture range can help maintain your wig’s condition. Note, you only have to use specifically designed wig shampoo on a synthetic wig as opposed to our real hair wigs.

6. What should I do if my wig feels dry or matted after a holiday?

If your wig feels dry or matted due to changes in climate and humidity, consider using hydrating serums, leave-in conditioners, or deep-conditioning treatments like Olaplex or Philip Kingsley’s Elasticizer. These can help restore the softness and shine to your wig.

7. Can I send my wig for professional cleaning and conditioning after a holiday?

Yes, Mandeville London offers a deep cleansing and conditioning service for all our clients. You can drop off your wig, half wig, or hairpiece at our studio, or send it via post. Our team will take care of it and ensure it’s revitalised and ready for wear.

8. Are Mandeville London wigs suitable for hot climates?

Yes, our wigs and hairpieces are designed to be lightweight and breathable, making them ideal for hot climates. This ensures that you stay comfortable even in warmer weather while enjoying a secure and natural-looking wig.

9. Can I colour my human hair wig if it fades due to sun exposure?

While it’s possible to recolour your human hair wig if it fades, we recommend taking precautions to prevent sun damage in the first place. Using a hat or staying in the shade are simple ways to protect your wig’s colour from UV rays. Remember never to do colour work at home, please contact us as we can do this for all Mandeville London clients.

10. Is it necessary to bring my wig stand when travelling?

While it’s not necessary to bring your portable wig stand, it is helpful for maintaining the shape and style of your wig. If you prefer not to travel with it, make sure to bring your head block and pins for washing and styling, or use tissue paper inside your wig for storage if you won't need to wash your piece during your trip.
